Wongamat vs. Jomtien vs. Pratumnak — which district fits you

"Pattaya" is actually a misleading word. It sounds like one place, but it's a good dozen very different worlds that happen to share a name. People who move here and simply move "to Pattaya," without consciously choosing a district, often wonder later why they don't feel at home.

I've lived here for years and I know these neighbourhoods not from a brochure, but because I live, shop and visit friends in them. Let me walk you through the three locations expats ask me about most — honestly, with the good and the bad.

Wongamat — the quiet, upscale Pattaya

Wongamat sits in the north, right on the water, and for many it's the surprise: they didn't picture Pattaya this calm. Here you'll find the nicer stretches of beach, well-kept high-rise condos with real sea views, and a crowd made up more of long-term residents and families than weekend tourists.

Who it suits: If you want calm, quality and a good beach on your doorstep, and you're willing to pay a bit more for it, Wongamat is often first choice. It's close enough to be in the buzz in 10–15 minutes, but far enough to have your peace in the evening.

The catch: You pay for that location. Per-square-metre prices are among the highest in Pattaya, and for daily life (supermarket, doctor) you'll need a scooter or car.

Pratumnak — the "quiet middle"

Pratumnak Hill lies between Pattaya and Jomtien and is often rated by insiders as the best compromise. The hill is green, comparatively quiet, and yet extremely central: from here you're minutes from both the Pattaya buzz and the more relaxed Jomtien Beach.

Who it suits: Pratumnak is my most frequent tip for people who don't want to choose between liveliness and calm. Lots of nice condo projects, a few hidden beaches, good restaurants — without being overrun.

The catch: "Hidden gem" isn't quite true anymore — prices have climbed, and some corners are a genuine hillside location, meaning a tough walk on foot. Look carefully at how steep your route to the beach really is.

Jomtien — relaxed, more affordable, changing

Jomtien is the long beach south of Pratumnak and feels noticeably more laid-back than central Pattaya. Many long-term expats and retirees live here, there's a long beachfront promenade, countless restaurants and an overall calmer pace.

Who it suits: If you want a relaxed beach life with good infrastructure and your budget doesn't stretch to Wongamat (or you simply don't want to spend it), Jomtien is strong. You get more square metres for your money here.

The catch: Jomtien is big and very mixed. Some stretches are lovely, others are still developing or shaped by heavy traffic. "Jomtien" alone says little — it comes down to the specific soi (street).

My honest advice

There is no single best location — there's the best location for you. The mistake I see most: people fall in love with an apartment and ignore whether the neighbourhood fits their life. Then they sit in a beautiful condo, in the wrong place.

My tip before you commit: rent for a few weeks in the area that tempts you. Walk the routes you'd take every day. Go out in the evening. Only then will you know if it fits.
